Kestrel Class

Welcome to Kestrel Class!

Our topic this term is Stone Age to Iron Age. We will be learning what life was like in the Stone Age, what was needed to survive in prehistoric times, and we will create time lines of important events and developments from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.

In Literacy, we are reading Stig of the Dump – a story in which a modern boy meeting a cave-dwelling friend and learns to create tools to survive and live more comfortably. We will be writing diary entries and innovating our own versions of the story.

In Maths, we are focusing on place value skills through a range of resources and activities – including physically representing numbers with Dienes and using reasoning to solve problems. We will develop skills such as partitioning numbers, understanding number lines, comparing and ordering numbers, counting in 1000s and finding 1, 10 and 100 more or less than a given number.

In Science, our topic is Humans Including Animals. We will be focusing on human and animal digestive systems, and the properties and functions of different teeth. We will be assembling digestive systems, labelling the parts and explaining their functions.

We will promote social and emotional wellbeing through the Jigsaw PSHE curriculum and focusing on E-Safety for ICT. The ‘Being Me’ PSHE unit focuses on who we are, what makes us unique or similar to others, and who the people in our community are. For E-Safety, we will learn what to do if somebody makes us uncomfortable online, how to create strong passwords and what to do if you are concerned about cyber-bulling.

Our PE lessons will be on Wednesday afternoons. Please send your children to school already wearing their PE kits on Wednesdays.

If you would ever like to discuss anything with me, you can contact via Class Dojo or arrange an in-person or online meeting.

Kind regards,

Mr Casey
